School Spirit

February 1, 2014

Growing up the daughter of two red and blue bleeding, Hotty Toddy shouting University of Mississippi alumni, I always had a very clear idea of what school spirit was.  My parents to this day are still best friends with their college best friends, and if they had their way they'd never miss an Ole Miss Rebels home football game. Both my parents were inducted into the Ole Miss Alumni Hall of Fame, my father serves on The Alumni Association, and my mother is on The Ole Miss Women's Council for Philanthropy which oversees the largest scholarship endowment on campus.  Needless to say, they are INVOLVED.

That's not necessarily the case where I went to school.  Most of my fellow classmates will be paying off the student loans they had to take out to attend college for years to come, so the last thing they want to think about is giving back in any way.  I mean we aren't even allowed to enter our hallowed halls to use the BATHROOM.  $250,000 later and we can't even use the bathroom.  Can you imagine?  So needless to say when I received an email today from NYU, my alma mater, introducing their new #NYUAlumniInspire social media campaign I was none too pleased.

What they're asking us to do is post pictures on Instagram showing all the amazing and/or positive things we're doing in our lives, and then use that hashtag so fellow alumni can follow all these amazing and/or positive things and ergo become inspired to do amazing and/or positive things as well!

It's an entire campaign based on humble bragging. I hate humble bragging. I imagine if I were to explore this hashtag I would be bombarded by successful alumni curing cancer or saving the world, which is SO great, but before I knew it I would find myself at the bottom of a bottle of wine wondering what in the H-E-double hockey sticks I'm doing with my life. But hey, I'm as proud a Violet as anyone (yes we are the Violets, you'll notice the use of exclusively "V" adjectives in the campaign), so I'll participate.

I hope this leaves you inspired as you head into the weekend. I mean, it's a really pretty bed. The headboard is a part of my great grandmother's bedroom set from when she was my age.  At least I have that going for me!

Have a great weekend, y'all!
